Application of Problem Based Learning in Nursing Education

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to search for the results of self evaluation about problem based learning in nursing students. A descriptive survey research design was used. The sample were 52 junior nursing students in adult-health nursing course for one semester, 2006. The tool was questionnaire with self-evaluation of problem-based learning, students¡¯ self-evaluation of small group, students¡¯ self-evaluation of small group activity, students¡¯ self-evaluation of self directed learning, students¡¯ self-evaluation of problem based learning which are suggested by Chung et al. (2006). With collected data, it performed descriptive analysis, mean, SD, Maximum, and Minimum using the statistical program of Excel. Subjective descriptions of student were analyzed by the method of content analysis. Results were as follows:
The mean scores were 3.35 in students¡¯ self-evaluation of problem-based learning 3.46 in students¡¯ self-evaluation of small group, 3.63 in students¡¯ self-evaluation of small group activity, 3.32 in students¡¯ self-evaluation of self directed learning, and 4.42 in students¡¯ self-evaluation of problem based learning. Advantages of problem based learning in nursing students were ¡¯Practices of critical thinking¡¯, ¡¯problem solving¡¯, ¡¯memory¡¯. ¡¯communication¡¯, ¡¯motivation¡¯, ¡¯group skill¡¯ and
¡¯practical¡¯. Disadvantages of problem based learning in nursing students were "time consuming and much loading", "lack of training", and "lack of knowledge".
